Al Condeluci Keynote

Al Condeluci, PhD
Keynote – Change, Challenge, and Opportunity

The notion of change is always present.  Whether we want, need or must change, once we come to a point of frustration, we then find ourselves at the locus of change.  Yet, the majority of services we currently offer have become systems unto themselves, or our personal patterns of behavior have become so deeply rooted in the existing paradigm, they are often resistant to change. This interactive presentation will look at the challenge of change, explore its elements and introduce a framework for managing the change process.

Leigh Steiner, Ph.D.

The Culture of Learning and Identifying Staff Strengths and Abilities

Peter Senge identified learning organizations are those where "people continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire....where people are continually learning how to learn together." Creating and fostering a culture of learning requires focusing on the personal mastery of all staff, the building of team culture, and the management of talents. Identifying and nurturing the inner fire within each of us is a key path to sustaining an energized and resilient workforce.

A Leader's FOCUS

We all strive to balance our personal and professional lives, to be remembered, and to live a life of significance. More often than not, the problems and struggles we endure are the direct result of an improper focus. It is this balance and significance one can find while mastering A Leader’s FOCUS.

Thomas takes the “best of the best” leadership principles, stories and experiences and distills life gems for immediate understanding and application. His powerful stories give meaning behind the madness, in a principle everyone can relate to, laugh at, and apply to their lives.

A Leader’s FOCUS not only answers “What is Leadership?” but more importantly teaches how to lead and to develop the essential skills for personal and professional growth.

Joseph M. Macbeth - President and Chief Executive Officer

For more than four decades, direct support professionals have been supporting people with disabilities across every community in the country; helping people build and maintain relationships, supporting employment opportunities, supporting skills to live independently, supporting the unique and dignified contributions that build inclusive communities and promoting self-directed lives. Then, almost suddenly in early 2020, everything changed and community (where the work is done) was, for the most part closed. Over the course of the past year (or more), direct support professionals re-defined their jobs without a road map, supporting social distancing, educating about the needs of personal protective equipment, dealing with issues pertaining to daily schedule changes, using new technology to build relationships, and of course, keeping people who are three times more likely to die from the COVID-19 virus, healthy and safe. As with all crises, they rose to the occasion and exceeded expectations and as we emerge from these dark days, how will the I/DD system, funders and policy makers recognize these “heroes”? What opportunities are there to finally address this decades-long workforce “crisis”? This session will provide reflections from the pandemic and solution-driven ideas to finally create the hallmarks of a meaningful career for our direct support workforce.
